ROCK OF AGES
When you are weak and your enemy is strong, your best defense is to flee to a place where your enemy cannot follow.
Solomon says, "Conies are creatures of little strength, yet they make their home in the crags." (Proverbs 30:26) The cony or rock badger is a weak, timid, furry, rabbit-like animal. It has no way of defending itself against its natural enemies: the weasel, the fox, the hawk, and the eagle. Being defenseless, the cony lives in the crags and among the rocks. It never ventures far from home. Rather than stand up against its enemies and be killed, it runs swiftly for the rocks where it cannot be reached. One summer while in Kenya, I observed how swiftly the small conies can flee to the rock when danger threatens.
Foolishly, Christians try to stand against the crafty schemes of Satan. They feel that they can defeat him by their own power. But he is deceptive and more powerful than Christians. The wisest and most sensible thing to do is to run to God and find sanctuary there. David said, "In you, O Lord, I have taken refuge; let me never be put to shame. Rescue me and deliver me in your righteousness; turn your ear to me and save me. Be my rock of refuge, to which I can always go; give the command to save me, for you are my rock and my fortress." (Psalms 71:1-3)
God's strength is made perfect in weakness (2 Cor. 12:9). Therefore, God's strength can be perfected in you. When you recognize your weakness like the cony and flee to God as your rock of safety, you cannot be over-powered. God promises you that no one will come and take you from Him. (John 10:28) Satan can only defeat you when you are too proud and too confident in your own strength to flee to God, your rock of refuge.
The next time Satan comes after you, dont try to stand against him along. Flee to the Rock of Ages. As you seek refuge in God, allow these words from the well-known hymn to be your song, your prayer and your resolve:
